What I’m working on today…
The Icelandic Turtleneck (from Crochet Me: Designs to Fuel the Crochet Revolution) was one of the first patterns I wanted to make when I really started to become (let’s face it) obsessed with crochet. Now, over a year later, I’m finally making it. I initially bought some black wool for this sweater, but I never quite got going with it. When I pulled out this red, kettle-dyed sock yarn from Knit Picks, I realized it was perfect for this pattern, and less than a week later, the sweater is almost done. I actually think I’ll finish this weekend. I’d be thrilled to be able to wear it next week.
This pattern has had its ups and downs. A lot of people experienced wierd fabric bulges in the back. I’m pleased that I didn’t encounter this, though I took care to try it on every few rows, and check! I started the sweater with a mockneck (only 5 rows of the neck before increasing to the yoke). I also started with a size 38, but after the yoke was completed, and after the first row of the bust, I decreased evenly to the stitch count for a size 35. I had enough ease to do this this, and I think it has helped keep the bulge factor down.
When this is done, I think I’d like to make another one, in a boatneck like to many other ravelers tried, maybe multi-color. The pattern would also make a fabulous capelet, if the yoke was just continued evenly for 6 or 8 more rows. Now there’s an idea! With some slits, for arms to peek out. I’ll have to sketch that an figure it out. Maybe my black wool will have a purpose with that…
